As a child, I used to “help” my dad lay stone walls all over our mountainside yard. I would sit and hand him tiny pieces of rock that he placed into retaining walls that terraced and retained the slope of our shady land.  I loved it. IMG_0303

So when Philip and I decided to build a rock firepit, we talked to Dad about it.  And Saturday, they started.  I splayed out the stones on the grass took to my old roll of “stone-hander” although now I can lift much bigger rocks.

Yesterday, though, yesterday I began to lay stones myself, putting my vision of shape and size into this piece that will be the flaming heart to our evenings here.

You can read about that process at my writing blog Andilit today.
